0:00:11.7 Mike Vacanti: Hello, Jordan?
0:00:12.3 Jordan Syatt: What’s up Michael?
0:00:13.2 Mike Vacanti: Congratulations to everyone who got in the mentorship at the discounted lowest price that it will ever be. The sale is over. On with the podcast.
0:00:24.3 Jordan Syatt: Congratulations. Love seeing you in the mentorship lives. It’s been good so far. Yeah, let’s get… Let’s do it. What do we got for today, Michael?
0:00:31.9 Mike Vacanti: We are reviewing 11 through 20 of the best snacks for fat loss. Speaking of snacks, what are you snacking on over there?
0:00:40.8 Jordan Syatt: We got some raspberries.
0:00:42.7 Mike Vacanti: Nice.
0:00:43.1 Jordan Syatt: All right.
0:00:44.8 Mike Vacanti: I like that.
0:00:44.9 Jordan Syatt: And my wife made some sweet potato fries and she… I really like the burnt ones so she made me a whole bag of the burnt ones.
0:00:54.4 Mike Vacanti: You’re not scared of the carcinogens there?
0:00:56.5 Jordan Syatt: It’s worth it.
0:00:57.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:00:57.4 Jordan Syatt: They’re so good, dude. [laughter] They’re so good.
0:01:01.1 Mike Vacanti: Is it worth it or you just genuinely aren’t worried about eating burnt stuff?
0:01:05.0 Jordan Syatt: I’m mildly concerned about it.
0:01:06.6 Mike Vacanti: Okay, but you really like it relative to like a soggy sweet potato fry?
0:01:09.8 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:01:12.5 Mike Vacanti: Man, I’m lucky. I like my sweet potato fries soggy.
0:01:15.2 Jordan Syatt: Really?
0:01:15.7 Mike Vacanti: Uh-huh.
0:01:16.3 Jordan Syatt: Oh man, I like that crunch.
0:01:19.3 Mike Vacanti: Dude, I think a 30 or 90 day dopamine fast needs to happen at some point.
0:01:28.7 Jordan Syatt: For me?
0:01:28.8 Mike Vacanti: For everybody. I was thinking of myself but like 20% myself, 80% the entire world, the entire western world, the entire world that is like has cell phones basically.
0:01:38.1 Jordan Syatt: I feel like you do that all the time.
0:01:40.0 Mike Vacanti: No, no, no. A fast. Like…
0:01:42.8 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:01:42.9 Mike Vacanti: No, no, no, no, no. A fast. Zero easy dopamine, zero cheap dopamine inputs in life for like an extended period of time.
0:01:57.5 Jordan Syatt: But like you basically got rid of scrolling so I don’t know what else you would fast on.
0:02:02.7 Mike Vacanti: First of all, 80% the world, 20% me. So let’s not make this about me. If we look outwardly, what are the things people struggle with? Alcohol, screens, ultra processed garbage. Like and this isn’t necessarily a list of things that are bad for you. Because the one I’m about to say actually has health benefits. But I think removing it for a period of time in the spirit of actually cut out everything that is cheap dopamine, caffeine. I’ve realized over that probably for the last 20 years, I am very, very mildly addicted to the sensation of taking pre-workout and lifting like caffeine plus lift. It makes me enjoy the lift more. What does 90 days of training with zero caffeine look like?
0:02:57.2 Jordan Syatt: Bro, workouts without caffeine, that’d be tough.
0:03:01.3 Mike Vacanti: Be very tough.
0:03:02.1 Jordan Syatt: I don’t know if you’d enjoy your workout as much.
0:03:03.8 Mike Vacanti: I definitely wouldn’t. But the point is a reset due to the environment we live in.
0:03:09.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. So what would people do?
0:03:12.6 Mike Vacanti: I just told you, they would not do any…
0:03:15.2 Jordan Syatt: No. Like, what would they be doing, though? Just, like, working and with their family getting outside?
0:03:20.7 Mike Vacanti: You can do anything that isn’t easy dopamine, like, literally anything you want to. Can’t smoke cigarettes, can’t chew, can’t, like, be scrolling on social media, no tv, I would say, goes in there. If we’re looking at, like, a hierarchy.
0:03:36.5 Jordan Syatt: Oh, wow.
0:03:36.6 Mike Vacanti: Right? Like, meth is at the top of the hierarchy. And then what’s like easy? Well, it’s Anna Lembke’s book.
0:03:42.4 Jordan Syatt: Really?
0:03:42.5 Mike Vacanti: It’s plus a thousand. Yeah. So what’s it… What’s like a bare… Like, listening to music, since it’s a fast listening to music, which is maybe, like, you know what? 5%, like, gives you a very mild boost.
0:03:57.5 Jordan Syatt: Wow.
0:03:58.3 Mike Vacanti: Little boost.
[overlapping conversation]
0:03:58.9 Jordan Syatt: Fast. Yeah.
0:03:59.9 Mike Vacanti: You got to earn it. I would say, yeah, like, going for a walk or something is allowed, obviously.
0:04:07.8 Jordan Syatt: Is meditation?
0:04:10.1 Mike Vacanti: Of course. That’s… Is that cheap or is that hard?
0:04:12.0 Jordan Syatt: Ah, okay. Okay.
0:04:13.6 Mike Vacanti: Is it passive? Do you sit there, or is it difficult? And it’s difficult… Even the people who are really good at it, it’s difficult for everyone or was difficult when they started for certain. So, yeah, you can only do things. My concern, though, is based on the environment we live in. How do you reenter the normal world after X period of time challenge?
0:04:38.0 Jordan Syatt: It would just be, like, way too overwhelming.
0:04:40.1 Mike Vacanti: Way too overwhelming. Like how do you redownload Twitter and jump back into…
[overlapping conversation]
0:04:46.7 Jordan Syatt: Probably just like being a baby, like a baby comes in this world, they’re like, what the fuck is this? [laughter]
0:04:51.7 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:04:52.0 Jordan Syatt: You’re… Yeah, like, a newborn.
0:04:53.9 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. I mean, hopefully most newborns aren’t on Twitter, but for those that are, God bless them. [laughter] Speaking of, I saw a video of like a mom, and no disrespect, obviously, parenting is difficult, right? Yada, yada. Put the…
0:05:14.4 Jordan Syatt: Disclaimers.
0:05:15.0 Mike Vacanti: Play defense at first, but she had an iPad over her shoulder, like, a strap over her shoulder with an iPad dangling behind her. And she was shopping.
0:05:25.2 Jordan Syatt: No way.
0:05:25.3 Mike Vacanti: And her kid was just following her around.
0:05:28.4 Jordan Syatt: No way.
0:05:28.5 Mike Vacanti: When she would, like, turn the corner, her kid would, like, run around to the other side to see the iPad. [laughter] It appeared to be effective, but.
0:05:35.8 Jordan Syatt: So the iPad was on, and so the kid was just watching, like, as she walked, and the kid was walking behind her?
0:05:40.7 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:05:42.0 Jordan Syatt: I feel like just put it in the shopping cart.
0:05:45.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:05:46.4 Jordan Syatt: The kid was, like, ridiculously overcomplicated.
0:05:50.2 Mike Vacanti: Maybe she didn’t have a cart. I don’t know what was going on.
0:05:54.8 Jordan Syatt: What fucking cart?
0:05:54.9 Mike Vacanti: Anyway, I shouldn’t have even been watching it on Twitter. What am I doing? [laughter] Scroll. But I actually think that this would be life changing for anyone who decided to embark on this.
0:06:07.4 Jordan Syatt: Society changing, yeah.
0:06:08.8 Mike Vacanti: No, not because no one’s gonna do it.
0:06:10.4 Jordan Syatt: No. But if it did, if it happened, it would be society changing.
0:06:14.7 Mike Vacanti: Absolutely.
0:06:15.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:06:16.2 Mike Vacanti: But impossible. [laughter] Impossible.
0:06:21.3 Jordan Syatt: Isn’t that crazy that we’re in a time like we’re not scrolling?
0:06:27.2 Mike Vacanti: No, because we’re… Because…
0:06:27.3 Jordan Syatt: Because that’s the biggest one.
0:06:28.3 Mike Vacanti: We were built for scarcity and we live in a time of abundance.
0:06:32.6 Jordan Syatt: Bro.
0:06:33.5 Mike Vacanti: And so we’re programmed to not have all of this stuff. We’re programmed to when you get the kill, you eat the whole thing and you add body fat because you don’t know when your next kill’s gonna be. And now we live in a time where everything is available 24/7.
0:06:48.7 Jordan Syatt: I fully understand the irony of what I’m about to say, considering we’re talking about getting off social media. But one of my favorite trends right now that I’ve seen a couple people do is they have a family member who is not on social media, so their family member is living right. And they take videos of their family member.
0:07:06.8 Mike Vacanti: Or they just have a different vice, by the way, but continue.
0:07:10.4 Jordan Syatt: And it’s usually like a really funny family member. Like someone who’s just an absolutely hilarious person. And they take videos of them and they say, like, day one of putting my brother on social media and until he finds out about it. And like, their brother doesn’t have social media and they won’t find it. And the videos that you get of these people just living their life without social media and the shit that they say, just completely unaware, it’s actually, it’s hilarious because they do the funniest shit.
0:07:44.1 Mike Vacanti: What do they do?
0:07:45.2 Jordan Syatt: Man, it’s hard to explain in a way that accurately describes how funny it is. I’ll send you some of the videos, unless you just don’t wanna be on social media. But, like, there’s this one guy, you’d love this guy. There’s this one guy who is a huge football fan. Like, massive, massive football fan. And I saw this one a handful of months ago, but I forget what his team was, but they were playing and it was snowing outside. And this guy, he’s like, fuck, they’re playing in the snow. I need to be in the snow. So he goes outside in the snow and watches the game through the window while it’s snowing. And he’s like, I need to suffer with the team. [laughter] It is…
0:08:24.2 Mike Vacanti: And he’s not on social media?
0:08:25.9 Jordan Syatt: Not on social media. He’s just like this really, like, he’s just…
0:08:30.0 Mike Vacanti: Hardcore fan.
0:08:30.1 Jordan Syatt: I don’t know. Hardcore fan. And then there’s this other guy who I just found this video yesterday where his brother’s filming him, and he’s just, he lives in his garage.
[laughter]
0:08:43.1 Mike Vacanti: Okay.
0:08:44.4 Jordan Syatt: He just says the craziest shit. And I think that’s why these people start putting their family on social media, because they do crazy stuff. And like, man, this would go viral if people saw what this person was doing.
0:08:55.5 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:08:56.0 Jordan Syatt: But, yeah, it’s an amazing, amazing trend, that…
0:09:00.4 Mike Vacanti: Good.
0:09:01.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:09:01.9 Mike Vacanti: Exploiting their family member who is unaware.
0:09:04.9 Jordan Syatt: I knew you were gonna go there. [laughter]
0:09:07.2 Mike Vacanti: Poor guy. He’s just trying to live his life. He’s got something like…
0:09:09.8 Jordan Syatt: People love them. People aren’t making fun of them. People are like, I love this guy like, he’s amazing.
0:09:14.4 Mike Vacanti: Good, good. That makes me happy.
0:09:15.8 Jordan Syatt: No one’s hating. It’s all love.
0:09:17.3 Mike Vacanti: That makes me happy.
0:09:18.3 Jordan Syatt: They even for the guy that I saw yesterday, he wanted to buy his brother birthday presents, and people donated to buy his brother birthday presents, which is really nice. And he was like, where did all this come from? He’s like, you got a lot of friends you don’t know about.
[laughter]
0:09:30.4 Mike Vacanti: The Internet loves you. All right, I’m gonna do this 30 or 90 days. I haven’t decided which. 30 feels insufficient, but…
0:09:39.7 Jordan Syatt: Are you doing all of it? Like you’re no, obviously no scrolling, I think is the biggest one.
0:09:44.2 Mike Vacanti: That’s the only way to do it. Yeah. That’s the only way to do it. A complete reset.
0:09:49.2 Jordan Syatt: Man, that’s impressive. I’m not gonna join you.
0:09:53.6 Mike Vacanti: It’s not impressive because I haven’t done anything. I’ve done literally… It’s the opposite of impressive. I’ve done nothing. [laughter] What’s impressive about it?
0:10:03.2 Jordan Syatt: What made you think about this? What made you think that this had to be done? What led to this?
0:10:07.9 Mike Vacanti: What led to this? Just seeing how wrong the world is going.[laughter] Like no one…
0:10:16.4 Jordan Syatt: Was there anything specific or just?
0:10:17.7 Mike Vacanti: No one has any control over their behaviors or impulses anymore related to any technology, substance, food, et cetera. And when I say nobody, I mean, like, pretty much nobody, actually.
[laughter]
0:10:32.0 Jordan Syatt: When I say nobody, I mean nobody. [laughter]
0:10:39.6 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:10:40.4 Jordan Syatt: When does it begin?
0:10:40.9 Mike Vacanti: Don’t motivational interview me. This is for the world. This is not for me.
0:10:43.9 Jordan Syatt: Not motivational… I’m curious. I’m not motivational interviewing you, I’m… You’re the one who said you were gonna do it. There’s nothing to motivational interview. I’m just curious when it starts.
0:10:52.2 Mike Vacanti: I didn’t say I’m going to. I said I should do this. I need to do this.
0:10:56.2 Jordan Syatt: You did say you are. You absolutely said, I’m going to do this.
0:10:58.5 Mike Vacanti: I might have said that, but I’m just trying to create smoke so that there’s fire, so I actually do it. It’d be so incredibly difficult.
0:11:05.4 Jordan Syatt: Are podcasts allowed?
0:11:06.8 Mike Vacanti: No. Absolutely not.
0:11:08.0 Jordan Syatt: Oh, wow.
0:11:08.8 Mike Vacanti: I’m just making this up as I go along. [laughter] Should podcasts be allowed? Not for me. Not for me. It’s definitely like, okay, if I think about, is podcast easy or hard? Podcast is what I put on because I’m procrastinating listening to a difficult audiobook. The type of…
0:11:24.1 Jordan Syatt: Oh, so audiobook is allowed, but not podcast.
0:11:27.2 Mike Vacanti: For me, I would say no. Sit down and read a book and get your fricking neurotransmitters dialed back in. Turn your prefrontal cortex back on, like or I’m gonna end up on RETA in six months if I don’t figure my life out. [laughter] Kale chips, fat loss snacks.
0:11:47.3 Jordan Syatt: Oh, wow. We’re just jumping right into it.
0:11:49.2 Mike Vacanti: We’re diving right in. I got mine.
0:11:52.3 Jordan Syatt: Dude, they’re gonna think there was a jump that, like, went too fast.
0:11:56.7 Mike Vacanti: There was no jump.
0:11:58.1 Jordan Syatt: There’s no jump there. I’m like, oh, we’re starting now. Okay.
0:12:01.1 Mike Vacanti: We’re diving in.
0:12:01.2 Jordan Syatt: Kale chips as a fat loss snack, S tier to F tier.
0:12:04.2 Mike Vacanti: Like, sit with your child and just watch your child play for hours.
[overlapping conversation]
0:12:06.8 Jordan Syatt: Dude, you’re going back and forth, man, I’m struggling to fucking stay…
0:12:10.1 Mike Vacanti: I’m all over the place. Well, you got to keep up, buddy. You got to keep up.
0:12:12.1 Jordan Syatt: I’m trying.
0:12:12.6 Mike Vacanti: Try harder.
0:12:13.4 Jordan Syatt: Jeez.
0:12:14.6 Mike Vacanti: I’m waiting for you to write your thing down.
0:12:16.6 Jordan Syatt: No, you’re not. You’re fucking… You’re…
0:12:18.3 Mike Vacanti: I already wrote mine.
0:12:19.1 Jordan Syatt: All right, but then you’re jumping back while I’m thinking into this other stuff. I’m trying to think.
0:12:24.1 Mike Vacanti: I’m keeping the audience engaged while you think, and eat your raspberries over there. Chomp into the mic.
0:12:30.7 Jordan Syatt: This is… Mike does this. Mike just comes out of nowhere sometimes on a fucking heater.
0:12:34.9 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Yeah, I do.
0:12:38.1 Jordan Syatt: All right, ready?
0:12:39.1 Mike Vacanti: One, two, three.
0:12:42.8 Jordan Syatt: I don’t know why it’s flipping all over the place. Supposed to say D. I wrote D.
0:12:49.3 Mike Vacanti: F.
0:12:50.4 Jordan Syatt: F. Yeah. Explain.
0:12:52.9 Mike Vacanti: Horrendous snack. I mean, no protein, straight fat, right? Because if these are, it’s not just like kale, it’s kale with some kind of fat. And even if it’s olive oil, like, good it’s a healthy fat. But you don’t wanna be eating straight fat as a fat loss snack. Not to mention it doesn’t taste good. But for people who do think it tastes good, you’re eating salt plus fat, which just makes you wanna eat more of it. So you have this like non satiating caloric snack that doesn’t have protein that is just not helping you meet your fat loss goals. F tier.
0:13:29.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, I would just put it… I sure probably should give it an F plus.
0:13:33.6 Mike Vacanti: You’re putting it a tier above Cheetos.
0:13:35.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, exactly. Correct.
0:13:37.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, that makes sense. I’m just on a heater and angry.
0:13:40.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, yeah. Mike’s on a heater right now.
0:13:42.2 Mike Vacanti: 12, roasted chickpeas.
0:13:44.2 Jordan Syatt: Ooh.
0:13:45.5 Mike Vacanti: One, two, three. B.
0:13:49.3 Jordan Syatt: You ranked it higher than I did. That’s crazy.
0:13:51.9 Mike Vacanti: I mean, decent protein and a good amount of fiber and I don’t hate the taste.
0:13:59.4 Jordan Syatt: I’m ranking it relative to all other snacks. Okay, so I’m not…
[overlapping conversation]
0:14:04.9 Mike Vacanti: It’s… You’re grading on a curve, Jordan? That’s not how you do things. It’s either good or it’s not.
0:14:10.7 Jordan Syatt: Listen, Michael… [laughter]
0:14:13.4 Mike Vacanti: Keep going.
0:14:13.5 Jordan Syatt: Don’t get me started.
0:14:13.9 Mike Vacanti: No, I like what you’re doing. Keep going.
0:14:15.7 Jordan Syatt: I’m ranking it relative to apples, Greek yogurt, all this stuff. Right? So if someone’s like, hey, if I should have Greek yogurt and berries or kale chips or roasted chickpeas. Roasted chickpeas aren’t the first one, but they’re good. Like, they’re good. Decent protein, fiber. I think they taste amazing. There’s a couple issues for me. Number one is the lack of satiety. And if you’re really in a deficit, you’re gonna want something that’s gonna fill you up, so it’s just not gonna be that… And they’re so palatable. You could just knock them back, knock them back, knock them back, knock them back. Like, it’s just so easy.
[overlapping conversation]
0:15:00.3 Mike Vacanti: You really…
0:15:00.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, they’re… It’s like chips. They’re so easy to eat huge quantities of. And from a health perspective…
0:15:07.0 Mike Vacanti: Aren’t they softer?
0:15:08.2 Jordan Syatt: No, they’re crunchy.
0:15:10.8 Mike Vacanti: Oh, really?
0:15:11.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, they’re crunchy.
0:15:12.3 Mike Vacanti: Oh, okay. Okay.
0:15:14.7 Jordan Syatt: And I eat them. I think they’re great. But here’s the thing. When it comes to a fat loss snack, I would rather it be in its natural form almost all the time. I think food in its natural form is going to be more satiating, it’s gonna be more nutritious. And when you, listen, I’m eating literally, like essentially like roasted sweet potato right now, which is not necessarily in its natural form.
[overlapping conversation]
0:15:42.0 Mike Vacanti: You’re not trying to lose fat.
0:15:43.4 Jordan Syatt: I’m not trying to lose fat. Exactly. So if this was a health snack, I think it would be different, but from a fat loss snack, I think that the major issue is that it’s so palatable and so easy to knock back. That, yeah, you get some great nutrients in there, but you’re probably gonna end up being hungrier after eating them, especially for the amount of calories. So that’s why I gave it a B. I think they’re great and I love them, but for fat loss specifically, it’s probably gonna be one of the first things I cut out as a snack, and I’m gonna replace it with, like, Greek yogurt, berries, stuff like that.
0:16:19.1 Mike Vacanti: I don’t know this to be true, but you make a great point about raw versus cooked. Raw vegetables have to have higher thermic effect than cooked.
0:16:26.8 Jordan Syatt: Yes, without question. Yeah.
0:16:28.6 Mike Vacanti: I’m just thinking about the ease of digestion of cooked carrots versus raw carrots. It just seems like you can eat more to your point, but then also, like a minor point is you’re probably getting a little more thermic effect on the raw, whatever the food is. Like vegetables, specifically.
0:16:46.9 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:16:47.9 Mike Vacanti: 13, dark chocolate with almonds.
0:16:52.8 Jordan Syatt: All right, I’m just gonna do it unapologetically. I don’t care what people say.
0:16:56.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, Jordan’s putting an F unapologetically, I’m going just a little, just a notch higher. What do you got? One, two, three.
0:17:04.8 Jordan Syatt: F.
0:17:04.9 Mike Vacanti: I got E. This is a food that 99% of people are gonna eat way too much of, which is the reason I have it very low. It’s also very low protein. There are some people who can eat one square of dark chocolate after a meal and really get a lot of pleasure from it and not want anymore/be able to not have any more without exerting much willpower. And for those people, I say you’re in the minority, but more power to you. That’s awesome. Have your little bit of dark chocolate as a snack. For the majority of people, it’s just not a good snack.
0:17:46.8 Jordan Syatt: I’ll also add to that the people who can have one square of dark chocolate and be totally fine and just feel so great after that, they aren’t people who are in a fat loss phase because they don’t need to lose fat. [laughter] The person who’s like, oh, yeah, my favorite dessert is one square of dark chocolate with an almond, great, you’re super lean already. Like, that person is not struggling with their weight.
0:18:17.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, that’s a good point.
0:18:21.8 Jordan Syatt: So I have my own bias coming into this. I hate dark chocolate. I think it tastes like dog shit. I’ve never enjoyed it. Milk chocolate is infinitely better, it’s just not even close. And I think the health benefits are overstated and yeah, it’s just, it’s not filling. It’s… Yeah, I think it’s… If you enjoy it, great. But from a fat loss snack, I think it’s a F.
0:18:50.4 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, I’m with you.
0:18:51.1 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:18:51.3 Mike Vacanti: Especially if you’re on a 90 day dopamine cut, then you can’t have dark chocolate.
[laughter]
0:18:57.4 Jordan Syatt: You can’t have any chocolate on the dopamine cut. Right?
0:18:59.6 Mike Vacanti: Literally. No.
0:19:00.9 Jordan Syatt: Could you have cacao?
0:19:02.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, I suppose. Right? It’s a one ingredient option?
0:19:04.6 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. Yeah.
0:19:05.7 Mike Vacanti: I don’t know. I have to look into that. I’m not super well versed. I like more ultra processed milk chocolate.
0:19:12.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:19:13.1 Mike Vacanti: In terms of chocolate, I think that’s tastier. Literally, I was just thinking last night I had bran buds with Greek yogurt and apples before bed.
0:19:20.2 Jordan Syatt: Yes. So good.
0:19:21.7 Mike Vacanti: Not really. Not when you compare it to what I was having before, which was like chocolate chips, coconut flakes, blueberries, like it was like a dessert bowl versus this like health fiber bowl. And in my mind I’m like, I have been… It’s almost like you’re putting the wrong thing at the top of your value hierarchy when it’s a dessert food or caffeine or like anything worldly, essentially. Because I was looking forward to that bowl at the end of my day. And it’s like this artificial spike in how you feel when you, and obviously, you know, it could be a lot worse. Right? It could be heroin. Right? [laughter] So like there’s not anything that wrong with it. I do think they’re the downstream effects of continuing to live like that is inability to control your decision making processes.
0:20:19.9 Jordan Syatt: I feel like when you go on these heaters, you’re like, you’ve been doing something that you’re just disgusted with yourself and you’re like… [laughter]
0:20:26.1 Mike Vacanti: No, no, I’m not, I’m not. Disgusted, no. What I’ve been doing is I’ve been scrolling way too much. But I’m not disgusted with it. I’m more like, this is sad. What are you doing? I’m not retaining any of this. This is all Twitter slop. Half of it’s probably written by AI. Like, I’m wasting my life being on this device. That’s… I’m not that disgusted. Especially if I think comparatively in the things that other people are doing, that’s significantly worse.
0:20:56.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:20:57.3 Mike Vacanti: But it just feels like a wasted life.
0:21:02.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. It’s like, I feel like so many people in our generation, God willing, when we get to be really, really old and people say, like, what do you regret most? People are gonna be like, I wish I spent less time on my phone.
0:21:12.6 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, yeah… It’s… But then I see the downstream effects of more time on the phone makes other simple pleasures less enjoyable.
0:21:21.9 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, it’s true.
0:21:22.6 Mike Vacanti: It’s like my brain needs to be down regulated and my brain’s in a pretty good spot relative to the population, so we’re in trouble, trouble. [laughter] And then it’s like, okay, the free market is gonna create ways to combat this, which we’re actually seeing GLP-1s in food, for example. But I don’t know. I don’t know what it is in me that wants to just do it, like yeah.
0:21:49.0 Jordan Syatt: To prove… Is it to prove that you can do it?
0:21:53.2 Mike Vacanti: No, it… No. I almost don’t even wanna go down that because it might sound judgmental, but it is… It’s not to prove to me, it’s to place the correct thing at the top of my value hierarchy, which is God.
0:22:12.4 Jordan Syatt: Just objectively, yeah.
0:22:13.2 Mike Vacanti: Objectively. Which isn’t like, I can’t wait for tomorrow’s workout. And I used to really think that I love training. I love pre-workout plus training, [laughter] because I don’t like training without my pre-workout. The taste, the feeling, like, combine it with music, Andrew Huberman, who I think gets a lot of stuff right and I think gets like shit on unnecessarily by the evidence based fitness community, had a good episode on dopamine stacking, where you’re doing multiple dopaminergic things at the same time, which is not good for a number of reasons, including that it like sets that peak of what you’re chasing even higher. I know I’m very back and forth here, but…
0:23:00.0 Jordan Syatt: No, it’s good. I’ll tell you my issue that I have with Andrew Huberman, because I think you’re right.
0:23:05.5 Mike Vacanti: That’s where you wanna take this?
0:23:06.4 Jordan Syatt: Well, no, because it’s important. It’s an important discussion. I think you’re right that he gets a lot right. I’ll tell you where I struggle with him is he’ll bring people on his podcast and he won’t say something that’s wrong, but they’ll say something that’s wrong and he won’t push back. That’s where I get, where he’ll platform people who are objectively saying something ridiculous and he’ll just be like, oh, that’s really interesting. Or that’s crazy, but he won’t say, that’s not accurate, that’s where I struggle.
0:23:40.6 Mike Vacanti: Isn’t that the same thing that you did when the Menoposse came after you because you had someone on who, like, they didn’t like her views on HRT and they’re like, you didn’t push back hard enough on her?
0:23:50.6 Jordan Syatt: No, it wasn’t that I didn’t push back. It was that they didn’t even like that I had her on.
0:23:55.4 Mike Vacanti: That you platformed her.
0:23:55.5 Jordan Syatt: But I did talk to her like, I had legitimate… And there weren’t things that she said that were objectively false.
0:24:00.3 Mike Vacanti: Got it. So you think… And I haven’t actively listened to Huberman ever actually, but I remember seeing that clip. Does he have people on who it’s very obvious that he disagrees with their views but doesn’t say anything for, like, whatever business reasons or networking or does he agree with them and you just disagree with what they’re saying?
0:24:24.2 Jordan Syatt: I think that he will know that they’re wrong and I don’t know him at all. I would… Here’s what I would bet, I would bet that he’s probably a ridiculously nice guy and he doesn’t wanna… Like, he doesn’t wanna make them uncomfortable. That’s my guess. I don’t think it’s malicious. I think he’s like, I just don’t wanna make you uncomfortable. And I’ll sit here and listen to what you’re saying.
0:24:45.2 Mike Vacanti: Have like a contentious episode.
0:24:46.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. That’s probably what’s going on. And by the way, I can recognize that because I also struggle with that. When I have someone on a podcast that will say something that I disagree with, it’s very difficult to say, like, hey, I think that’s wrong. It can be really challenging.
0:25:01.6 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, I mean, we’ll leave it at that, I’m… Tuna, canned tuna. [laughter] I just, I’ve never heard you hate on them before. I’ve heard other people hate on them and I’m like, go start your own podcast, that’s massive. And do it the way that you wanna do it then, rather than tear down other people’s building, build your own.
0:25:25.1 Jordan Syatt: Dude, I agree.
0:25:25.8 Mike Vacanti: But you won’t because you’re in the circle jerk, [laughter] just hoping for some affiliate sales from your fellow dopes. Tuna or canned fish on whole grain crackers/toast. One, two, three.
0:25:45.3 Jordan Syatt: S.
0:25:45.4 Mike Vacanti: S tier, baby.
0:25:45.7 Jordan Syatt: S tier. S tier. There’s just no debating it. It’s so… From… There’s no debating it. It’s low calorie, high protein, filling, I like the taste. It’s so good.
0:26:03.6 Mike Vacanti: Me too. Me too.
0:26:06.3 Jordan Syatt: It’s… You know what I just got, I just got a whole, a ton of sardines, which is different because it’s higher fat, but like…
0:26:18.5 Mike Vacanti: Are they good? I don’t know that I’ve had sardines.
0:26:22.7 Jordan Syatt: So I actually spent a fair amount of time looking into it. They’re not just plain, they’re like spicy. I got in a spicy oil. Really good.
0:26:32.0 Mike Vacanti: Nice.
0:26:33.1 Jordan Syatt: Really, really, really good. Yeah, and they’re great. You could put them on salads. There’s a bunch you can do with it. But super high quality Omega threes. Yeah, but I mean, not from… I don’t do it for a fat loss, I do it more for the health benefits of it. But from a fat loss perspective, whether it’s tuna or even, dude, you go to a CVS or a Walgreens, whatever, they’ve got like bagged salmon. Like…
0:27:03.8 Mike Vacanti: Bagged?
0:27:03.9 Jordan Syatt: It’s in this, like, airtight bag, but it’s… Instead of in a can, they put it in this airtight bag. And you can take this salmon and put it on your salad or whatever or even just eat it out of the bag, and they’ve got different flavors of it.
0:27:16.1 Mike Vacanti: Is it smoked?
0:27:17.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, I think it’s smoked. Yeah, it’s super good.
0:27:21.7 Mike Vacanti: Cool.
0:27:21.8 Jordan Syatt: Low calorie, high protein. It’s amazing and it’s convenient.
0:27:25.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Those tuna packets that they sell.
0:27:28.4 Jordan Syatt: Amazing.
0:27:28.8 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. All different flavors. You know, between like zero and four, I think one of them has the ranch, maybe has four fat, but most of them are like zero, one or two fat and 15 to 17 protein. Convenient, yeah.
0:27:42.2 Jordan Syatt: And they’re like $1.99 or something.
0:27:44.4 Mike Vacanti: It might be less.
0:27:45.8 Jordan Syatt: They’re so inexpensive. It might be 99 cents. They’re so inexpensive.
0:27:50.2 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. For the convenience they provide for sure.
0:27:53.4 Jordan Syatt: Yes.
0:27:54.0 Mike Vacanti: Would you eat those on an airplane, Jordan?
0:27:55.8 Jordan Syatt: No. [laughter] No.
0:28:00.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, I agree. Chia pudding made with milk or yogurt. High fiber/omega threes. Add berries for flavor. One, two, three.
0:28:17.7 Jordan Syatt: D.
0:28:17.8 Mike Vacanti: Couple of Ds.
0:28:18.6 Jordan Syatt: Double Ds.
0:28:19.6 Mike Vacanti: I knew you were going there. [laughter] I know you were going there. Sick guy, Jordan. You’re a real sick guy.
[laughter]
0:28:29.3 Jordan Syatt: Pair of Ds. That’s what we got. That’s it. Listen, man, like, that’s… I think it’s probably delicious. I think it probably tastes really, really good and there’s legitimate health benefits to it. But from a fat loss snack, it’s just not ideal. And it’s a step above dark chocolate with almonds, from a fat loss snack, it’s a step above.
0:28:54.3 Mike Vacanti: I mean, it’s less hyper palatable. It’s… You got, from a health perspective, yeah, because of the chocolate.
0:29:03.1 Jordan Syatt: Significantly better. Yeah.
0:29:05.1 Mike Vacanti: Well, I don’t know how much chocolate and how much almonds, but usually, and if they’re chocolate covered almonds, usually the ratio of chocolate to almonds is insane. Like a lot of chocolate and not a ton of almond. Depending on the crunch, that’s actually changed a little bit.
[overlapping conversation]
0:29:20.3 Jordan Syatt: It’s like half an inch of chocolate…
[laughter]
0:29:24.1 Mike Vacanti: Yes. The ones that they sell at the supermarket where they’re not in like a prepackaged bag, but you scoop them out yourself and put them in, those are so dense.
0:29:34.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. [laughter]
0:29:35.6 Mike Vacanti: Like…
0:29:38.1 Jordan Syatt: It’s like malted milk balls, but with almonds.
0:29:42.3 Mike Vacanti: Even higher calorie malted milk balls have like the light on the inside. These are just like heavy and delicious. You know, at Citarella in the city, they actually sell these in the little pre… They’re pre-packaged, but they’re…
0:29:54.8 Jordan Syatt: The plastic containers.
0:29:58.0 Mike Vacanti: Grocery store brand, oh, my gosh.
0:29:59.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:29:59.7 Mike Vacanti: They have to be over a 1000 calories in that little small package. Yeah. D tier. All right, 16, celery with cream cheese or nut butter.
0:30:10.2 Jordan Syatt: Okay.
0:30:10.5 Mike Vacanti: See this, and we’re late in the list. So AI is clearly picking this up from a poorly written blog post.
0:30:15.1 Jordan Syatt: Blog, yeah.
0:30:15.4 Mike Vacanti: But it says low cal crunch plus fat and protein. Classic and effective. Like, where’s the protein?
0:30:23.2 Jordan Syatt: This is definitely like a 2001 blog that it’s picking this up from.
0:30:26.8 Mike Vacanti: Okay. One, two, three.
0:30:30.6 Jordan Syatt: F.
0:30:30.7 Mike Vacanti: F.
0:30:31.9 Jordan Syatt: Double Fs.
0:30:33.0 Mike Vacanti: Double Fs.
0:30:34.3 Jordan Syatt: You’re literally using celery as a spoon for cream cheese and peanut butter. [laughter]
0:30:40.7 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:30:41.1 Jordan Syatt: Like that’s an absolutely horrible, horrible… And the fact that it was like high quality fat and protein, all right, no, not protein. Super low protein, especially relative on the calories. And I wouldn’t say that it’s high quality fat either.
0:30:58.5 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, nut butters are higher quality fat than cream cheese obviously. But this is a horrific fat loss snack.
0:31:05.2 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:31:05.6 Mike Vacanti: It’s actually just a… Like, I can’t see the point in ever eating this. [laughter] Is it even that tasty? Like of all the things we could eat.
0:31:17.2 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. I remember having like ants on a log as a kid with celery, peanut butter and raisins. Like that was good, but you’re just having peanut butter and raisins with a crunch. Like it’s… Yeah, it tastes good.
0:31:27.9 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. With a crunch that was all stringy and like celery doesn’t taste that good. [laughter] It also doesn’t really go with peanut butter. Anytime I had ants on a log, I just ate… I literally didn’t eat the celery.
0:31:39.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. You just licked out the peanut butter. [laughter]
0:31:40.8 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Maybe like, took one bite of it, like, this is gross.
0:31:43.6 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. You got the string in your teeth. Yeah.
0:31:46.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. I guess for a kid, and you’re going for convenience and you’re opening them up to different textures, like, I can see it, but not when you’re an adult.
0:31:55.3 Jordan Syatt: I, even as a kid, like, there’s so many… You don’t need that celery texture. Like, you’re fine. That’s not a texture you need to get them accustomed to, like, they’re good. [laughter]
0:32:07.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Just raw celery’s…
0:32:08.1 Jordan Syatt: No one finds that comfortable, even like, no one likes the stringiness.
0:32:13.8 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. I’m not a big celery guy. Turkey or chicken roll ups with cheese or veggies?
0:32:20.1 Jordan Syatt: What, a roll up, as in, like, a wrap?
0:32:22.0 Mike Vacanti: I would imagine what this is is think of, like, deli turkey and then put, like, you know, one little, like, thin piece of Swiss cheese and then roll it up and dip it in mustard maybe.
0:32:32.5 Jordan Syatt: Oh, it’s rolled up with mozzarella or Swiss cheese? Like, it’s rolled up with cheese, not with a wrap?
0:32:38.2 Mike Vacanti: This isn’t a wrap. We’re not eating like, you know, you go to a sub place and it’s like, I’ll have a wrap… It’s not that it’s like a…
[overlapping conversation]
0:32:45.4 Jordan Syatt: The circular things.
0:32:46.6 Mike Vacanti: Yes. It’s a roll up.
0:32:47.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. Yeah, it’s a roll up.
0:32:48.7 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:32:49.3 Jordan Syatt: But isn’t the roll up… Does the roll up have bread on the outside or is it cheese?
0:32:53.2 Mike Vacanti: No.
0:32:53.5 Jordan Syatt: Oh, okay.
0:32:54.3 Mike Vacanti: Here’s the way I’m picturing it. I’m picturing the cheese on the inside, and I’m picturing a higher ratio of…
0:33:01.9 Jordan Syatt: Got it. The meat is on the outside. It’s wrapped with meat.
0:33:04.2 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:33:04.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Got it. Yeah, it’s a Super Bowl snack.
0:33:07.0 Mike Vacanti: You go to a lot of Super Bowl parties?
0:33:08.7 Jordan Syatt: All the time. I usually go to several on the same night.
0:33:11.0 Mike Vacanti: No, you don’t. And so I don’t… [laughter] Because I’m like, I’ve never seen these at a Super Bowl party.
0:33:17.3 Jordan Syatt: You haven’t?
0:33:18.6 Mike Vacanti: Jordan, you don’t actually go to Super Bowl parties. [laughter] Buffalo chicken dip is a classic. Wings are a classic. These are like… These are more of, like, you might see these at a high school graduation party in 2008.
0:33:33.8 Jordan Syatt: I graduated in 2009, and I didn’t see any of those.
[laughter]
0:33:38.5 Mike Vacanti: In the Midwest. In the Midwest. One, two, three.
0:33:46.5 Jordan Syatt: Wow. That’s…
[overlapping conversation]
0:33:50.0 Mike Vacanti: Go ahead…
0:33:50.5 Jordan Syatt: Well, so you gave it an A. I gave it a D plus. What I was imagining was a huge amount…
0:33:58.8 Mike Vacanti: You’re gonna…
0:34:00.1 Jordan Syatt: What?
0:34:00.9 Mike Vacanti: Go ahead. I said, you’re gonna have a hard time with this one.
0:34:03.2 Jordan Syatt: I gave it a lot of… I’m imagining a lot of cheese.
0:34:06.8 Mike Vacanti: See, this is how I know you don’t see these at Super Bowl parties. Because they don’t have a lot of cheese.
0:34:11.3 Jordan Syatt: I thought you said there was a huge ratio of cheese.
0:34:13.8 Mike Vacanti: Huge ratio of turkey to cheese.
0:34:16.3 Jordan Syatt: Oh, I thought it was the other way. I thought it was a huge ratio of cheese to turkey.
0:34:19.9 Mike Vacanti: No.
0:34:20.5 Jordan Syatt: Well, in the Northeast, Super Bowl parties are different.
[laughter]
0:34:24.0 Mike Vacanti: I’ve been to Northeast Super Bowl parties. I lived in New York for 10 years, they don’t have these at New York Super Bowl parties or East Coast Super Bowl parties either.
0:34:31.1 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. Texas Super Bowl parties, man, are different.
0:34:33.2 Mike Vacanti: You haven’t been… I remember the Super Bowl, and you weren’t at a party.
0:34:36.8 Jordan Syatt: Listen, I’m a big Super Bowl guy, all right?
0:34:39.3 Mike Vacanti: And the Patriots might have been in it. I think you… The Pats were in a recent Super Bowl, and you were just chilling.
0:34:45.9 Jordan Syatt: Probably. I don’t think I can name one football player currently active, aside from… I was about to say Steph Curry, and he’s basketball. I have no idea. Travis Kelce.
0:34:57.0 Mike Vacanti: Did he retire? I actually don’t know.
0:34:59.0 Jordan Syatt: All right, so can I change it now, knowing that it’s mostly meat with a little bit of cheese?
0:35:03.2 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, you can.
0:35:03.4 Jordan Syatt: All right. I’ll give it an A if it’s just meat with a little bit of cheese.
0:35:07.0 Mike Vacanti: Cool. Why A and not S?
0:35:09.2 Jordan Syatt: Mainly the cheese. Right. It’s adding a little bit of unnecessary fats there. And again, this is for fat loss, not for health or anything and enjoyment or lifestyle. But if I’m trying to keep it as specifically as fat loss as possible, if I’m really dialed on a fat loss diet, I’m not having cheese, dude. Like, I’m… You know what I mean?
0:35:31.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:35:31.4 Jordan Syatt: I’m getting my fats elsewhere.
0:35:33.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Yep.
0:35:34.3 Jordan Syatt: I’m not getting my fats from cheese. It’s just, it’s not really necessary.
0:35:38.1 Mike Vacanti: I’m with you, for myself personally, I don’t hate the macros on this. Looking at turkey, which is straight protein, and cheese, which is protein and fat. And when you combine them, we’re looking at, like, you know, maybe 12 pro… 10 to 12 protein, and, like two to three fat per roll up or something like that. I actually love those macros for a fat loss snack. The reason I’m docking it is the carcinogenic risk of deli meats and not wanting that to be like a staple in terms of my protein intake.
0:36:15.2 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, yeah.
0:36:16.8 Mike Vacanti: And then obviously depends what you’re dipping it in. Depends, if it is a lot of cheese or like a decent amount more cheese and you end up with a little bit higher fat relative to protein. Like you said, it just becomes a worse and worse snack.
0:36:29.3 Jordan Syatt: So some of them do have a lot of cheese?
0:36:30.7 Mike Vacanti: No, I’m hypothesizing to make your… I’m steelmanning your position for you. See, [laughter] no to your point about being really low cheese or no cheese when you’re serious about fat loss, the leanest I’ve ever been, I remember, you know, anytime I’m eating, I’m thinking of in college being very lean and making that four hour, four and a half hour trip from the Twin Cities to Madison and stopping at a Subway and I would get double turkey, no cheese, spinach, onion, a little bit of honey mustard.
0:37:09.3 Jordan Syatt: Banana peppers.
0:37:10.2 Mike Vacanti: Some baked Lays and like a diet Coke. Just dialed.
0:37:15.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, cheese is like, when you’re losing fat, cheese is just not really worth it.
0:37:21.8 Mike Vacanti: And look, if someone absolutely loves cheese and you wanna use some of your fats on cheese, do it. Absolutely, but.
0:37:28.3 Jordan Syatt: I do like these Babybels, has these super low fat cheeses. I don’t know if you’ve seen them, they’re light blue, I’ll have that. And those are pretty filling. But those are objectively the really low fat cheeses just aren’t as good as the normal cheeses.
0:37:42.3 Mike Vacanti: They even sell fat free cheese, I’m pretty sure. Or at least they used to.
0:37:45.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, it’s a little bit plasticky.
0:37:46.8 Mike Vacanti: It’s very plasticky. And like, yeah, I’m not a huge fan.
0:37:51.2 Jordan Syatt: Like no fat cream cheese is terrible.
0:37:53.6 Mike Vacanti: I can’t even find it anymore.
0:37:55.1 Jordan Syatt: Oh, I haven’t even thought about that because I just haven’t wanted to buy it. But I remember I used to try it.
0:38:00.1 Mike Vacanti: The leanest cream cheese I see is one third less fat, which is kind of tricky because most people see that and they’re like oh, a third of the fat. But no, it’s actually two thirds the fat because it’s one third less [laughter] and they highlight it and put like a little blue around. It’s one third less fat. It’s like great, you’re taking it from like eight grams to like 5.6 grams.
0:38:21.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:38:22.2 Mike Vacanti: Berries alone or with yogurt? So let’s just say alone, berries. One, two, three. Jordan said A plus, I said A. This is an exception to the protein rule just due to their deliciousness, micronutrient profile, fiber, reasonable amount of satiety. No one ever like, you know, you hear people say, like, you never got fat from eating too much fruit. Probably correct. Dried fruit, mango strips, like depends on maybe. But no one definitely got fat from eating too many berries. That’s for sure.
0:39:05.7 Jordan Syatt: Correct. Yeah.
0:39:09.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. I’m just a fan of this. If you have these alone as a snack, does that mean you have to focus on your other meals/snacks getting higher protein to hit your protein for the day? Yes, you do. But that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. I think this is a great, healthy snack option.
0:39:23.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, agreed. And I… Listen, the only reason I gave it A plus and not the S is just because if I’m optimizing a fat loss snack for fat loss, there’s gonna be protein in it. Right? If for an S tier fat loss snack, there’s gonna be protein. But this is just such a great, healthy, productive option that is just, it’s amazing. And again, relative to all the other things you could be eating, it’s an A plus.
0:39:53.9 Mike Vacanti: Can’t stop thinking about just not being on social media and just grounding and being in the sun [laughter] and doing these workouts with no caffeine that are absolutely brutal, but getting through it.
0:40:06.7 Jordan Syatt: What, do you have to do outdoor workouts? Because you get like dopamine from the indoor and all the equipment you got to do outdoor stuff?
0:40:14.1 Mike Vacanti: I don’t know if you get dopamine from indoor workouts. Is that true?
0:40:17.0 Jordan Syatt: I mean, I do.
0:40:18.3 Mike Vacanti: Interesting.
0:40:18.4 Jordan Syatt: You know, air conditioning. You have all these nice pieces of equipment. When I see, when I go to a gym and I see all this nice equipment, I get super excited.
0:40:29.0 Mike Vacanti: So I’ve seen people like lay there and scroll for three straight hours. I’ve never seen someone, like, see equipment that excited them so much that they just like couldn’t leave the gym.
0:40:39.8 Jordan Syatt: Oh, that’s me.
0:40:40.8 Mike Vacanti: Interesting. Yeah, I’d have to think about that one. But yeah, outdoor workouts would be sweet. I actually think that doing no caffeine, my training sessions would be shorter, at least at first. And so I would love to do them outside with some equipment. I think that’d be a fun change of pace. Smoked salmon or lox with cream cheese?
0:41:04.8 Jordan Syatt: Does it have to be with cream cheese?
0:41:06.2 Mike Vacanti: Let’s go 19A and 19B. One, two, three.
0:41:13.0 Jordan Syatt: I put S and D. What did you put?
0:41:16.3 Mike Vacanti: I put B, C and D.
0:41:19.1 Jordan Syatt: Oh, so the first one is is between B and C and the second one is D?
0:41:22.6 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:41:23.4 Jordan Syatt: Got it. Okay, you wanna explain?
0:41:26.2 Mike Vacanti: I just have like a bias against smoked salmon. I don’t know why. I don’t think it tastes as good. It seems less fresh to me. You know, Obviously, the Omega threes are great.
0:41:43.1 Jordan Syatt: You’re not a smoked salmon guy?
0:41:44.2 Mike Vacanti: I’m not a smoked salmon guy.
0:41:45.3 Jordan Syatt: I love smoked salmon. I have it at least once a week when I’m at my daughter’s school.
0:41:51.4 Mike Vacanti: Oh, nice. Where do you get it?
0:41:53.3 Jordan Syatt: At the bagel shop.
[overlapping conversation]
0:41:55.8 Mike Vacanti: Nice. Nice.
0:41:56.3 Jordan Syatt: But you know what I do? I get it on one of their bagels and I’m like, no cream cheese. I just want a jalapeno bagel with smoked salmon and onions and capers. I’m really, like, keeping my saturated fats low, so there’s just no reason for me to be getting cream cheese on there. And when you go to one of these places, yeah, you could ask for light cream cheese, but if you’re getting it like a regular person, the amount of cream cheese they use is fucking crazy, dude.
0:42:29.8 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:42:30.4 Jordan Syatt: The amount of cream cheese they put on these things is absolutely insane. And even, like their light version is still multiple servings of cream cheese.
0:42:39.2 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:42:41.0 Jordan Syatt: So…
0:42:41.2 Mike Vacanti: It’s like going to Chipotle and saying just a little bit of sour cream, and they just take a giant spoonful and…
0:42:46.7 Jordan Syatt: Whack it on there.
0:42:47.7 Mike Vacanti: Whack it. Yes.
0:42:50.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. So smoked salmon for me is an S tier by itself. You get that cream cheese on there and now you’ve just made it a D. It’s just you’ve basically completely changed the entire composition of your meal and made it not worth it whatsoever from a fat loss perspective. It’s funny, like I know the term cheat meal has really gotten a bad rap, and I almost wanna go against it now and be like, before cheat meals and stuff. If I was gonna have a cheat meal, smoked salmon, bagel, tons of cream cheese, that would be a great, like, cheat meal. I would… That would be like, yeah, this is my… I love that. That would be so good. I wouldn’t have that as part of my day-to-day nutrition. That would be, occasionally, if I wanna… For some people, it would be, I don’t know, cake or whatever. That’s, like that cream cheese is like cake. Put it on that level. Cream cheese is not a health food. Cream cheese is not a fat loss food. Cream cheese is a, oh, I’m gonna treat myself food.
0:43:54.6 Mike Vacanti: Yes. Completely agree.
0:43:56.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:43:56.8 Mike Vacanti: Do people think of cream cheese as a health food?
0:43:59.2 Jordan Syatt: Apparently. Because AI is telling us a lot of fucking crazy.
0:44:01.5 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, it’s been on this list like four times.
[laughter]
0:44:05.5 Jordan Syatt: And that’s scraping the Internet.
0:44:07.3 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. What is up with that? Yeah. If you like smoked salmon, I think definitely closer to A territory by itself based purely on the macros and nutrition.
0:44:24.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:44:24.5 Mike Vacanti: Although the smoking kind of scares me. You’ve… You’re interesting. Like, you’re really on a saturated fat kick recently. But then there’s certain things that you just like don’t care about that much.
0:44:39.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. The… In terms… I used to be a lot more worried about the carcinogens in deli meats and smoked meats, but I was actually looking at it and it’s about the same carcinogenic risk as like your cell phone. It was a little bit overstated from…
0:45:03.7 Mike Vacanti: Or we should get rid of our cell phones.
0:45:06.1 Jordan Syatt: Or we should get… Yeah. Or… Yeah. So I was like, all right, I think I’m falling a little bit too deep into this one.
0:45:12.6 Mike Vacanti: Wasn’t it also… Yeah. Because I remember looking at this and it actually said that deli poultry risk was actually higher than deli cow risk, which is really weird.
0:45:26.9 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. It’s odd.
0:45:29.7 Mike Vacanti: And a lot of the research is around people who are consuming a lot of hot dogs and a lot of like the super high fat processed meats, which people who are consuming more of that are gonna be more obese, which is gonna lead to higher cancer rates for that reason, too.
0:45:47.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:45:48.0 Mike Vacanti: I don’t know. 20, pistachios or pumpkin seeds.
0:45:51.1 Jordan Syatt: Why do they have to group those together?
0:45:52.9 Mike Vacanti: Protein, healthy fats, and the satisfying crunch.
0:45:56.3 Jordan Syatt: I’m gonna split it into two different sections. Pistachios and pumpkin seeds are gonna be separate.
0:46:00.9 Mike Vacanti: One, two, three.
0:46:04.4 Jordan Syatt: I said D and B.
0:46:06.7 Mike Vacanti: I just said D. I didn’t even break them.
0:46:08.8 Jordan Syatt: You said… Oh, you gave them double Ds?
0:46:12.2 Mike Vacanti: No, I just gave the category a D.
0:46:15.1 Jordan Syatt: Okay. Wow. All right, you wanna explain?
0:46:17.8 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. Nuts just aren’t a fat loss snack. I don’t care what kind of nuts you’re eating. [laughter] It’s just plain and simple. We’ve… I’m surprised the pendulum never swung back on this. Like, it just seems like forever, I guess people have thought nuts are a good high protein fat loss snack and they’re just not. They’re not that satiating. They’re very easy to overeat, they’re very calorically dense and their protein to calorie ratio isn’t great.
0:46:47.4 Jordan Syatt: Would you put almonds on a D?
0:46:49.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. By themselves for a snack, I think I would. Here, let me see if we already ranked them and I am incorrect on this. I put mixed nuts almonds as a C last episode when I was in a better mood. [laughter] But yeah, I…
0:47:13.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. It’s consistent.
0:47:13.8 Mike Vacanti: Look, I’m never eating nuts by themselves as a snack, even when I’m not trying to lose fat. It’s just, I’ll pair them with protein. I do think that almonds are more satiating than other nuts for sure. But nuts alone aren’t a great fat loss snack.
0:47:30.7 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, I agree with that. I agree.
0:47:33.3 Mike Vacanti: Some nuts are better than others for sure. And looking at these pumpkin seeds, they’re a little bit higher protein, lower fat relative to other nuts.
0:47:39.9 Jordan Syatt: Yeah. I would put almonds and pumpkin seeds as like the elite nuts for like, if you’re gonna have like, hey, I wanna have the best nuts for fat loss, almonds and pumpkin seeds are. [laughter]
0:47:55.1 Mike Vacanti: You weren’t trying to be funny. You actually just said that. [laughter] Okay, keep going. Truly, if I wanna have the best nuts. [laughter] This guy over here.
0:48:09.3 Jordan Syatt: I’m just thinking of these, like, videos where the two dudes are being interviewed and like, one of them says something or someone says something and they just start laughing.
0:48:17.5 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. The interviewer. The woman interviewing them says…
0:48:20.5 Jordan Syatt: Gobble it up.
0:48:21.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [laughter] And they both kind of catch it. And then the one guy just keeps looking at his buddy, making him laugh. That’s really funny.
0:48:34.5 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:48:36.3 Mike Vacanti: That’s it.
0:48:36.8 Jordan Syatt: The best nuts for fat loss.
0:48:38.2 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, nuts just… I actually think most people listening know that nuts by themselves aren’t a great fat loss food.
0:48:44.3 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, correct.
0:48:45.5 Mike Vacanti: That’s our episode, brother.
0:48:46.4 Jordan Syatt: Dopamine detox. 90 days.
0:48:49.2 Mike Vacanti: I don’t even know what you call it.
0:48:52.3 Jordan Syatt: Starting today. Dopamine fast, starting today.
0:48:54.8 Mike Vacanti: You can mock it all you want, buddy, but…
0:48:56.0 Jordan Syatt: I’m not mocking anything.
0:48:58.5 Mike Vacanti: You are.
0:48:58.6 Jordan Syatt: I’m encouraging you. I’m not mocking anything. No, you’re just on one. You’re just heated right now. You’re doing the Michael Jordan thing. Yeah. Good game, buddy. I never fucking mocked it. I never said anything bad about it.
0:49:11.7 Mike Vacanti: I don’t use things that you say or do as… I haven’t used things that other people say or do as motivation to, like, do something difficult since 2016.
0:49:21.9 Jordan Syatt: Okay, well, good. I didn’t say anything bad about it.
0:49:24.5 Mike Vacanti: No, no, no. But you said I was doing the Michael Jordan where I pretend someone says something to motivate myself. I’m just letting you know I’m not doing that.
0:49:31.4 Jordan Syatt: Okay, well, I never said anything bad about it.
[laughter]
0:49:39.4 Mike Vacanti: Don’t you think that as a human being though, like, we should be able to not reach for our phone, we should be able to sit in silence for 60 seconds? Like, don’t you think that these are basic things that we should have the ability to do?
0:49:51.9 Jordan Syatt: 100%. That’s not debatable.
0:49:53.8 Mike Vacanti: Don’t you find it interesting that we can’t as a collective?
0:49:58.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, yeah. I think we are legitimately addicted to it, like legitimately. And when I say we, I include myself.
0:50:08.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah, as do I.
0:50:09.7 Jordan Syatt: That’s why you have this free roll against me where you don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop posting on social media because you’re banking on that addiction.
0:50:17.4 Mike Vacanti: No, no, no, no. That’s different. That’s different. I think if I had a free roll around your lifetime consumption, I’d be way more confident. On the creation side, I can under… That’s a different impulse. I just think you’re… Remember like Gary said, like you have that little bit of like stand up like entertainer, like showman piece of you that…
0:50:38.0 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:50:39.5 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. But I think there’s…
0:50:40.7 Jordan Syatt: I wouldn’t give you a free roll against consumption.
0:50:42.4 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. That would just be burning money for anyone. I’m gonna go the rest of my life without consuming hyper palatable content? Good luck. [laughter] Good, good luck.
0:50:56.2 Jordan Syatt: Good luck.
0:50:58.4 Mike Vacanti: We’ve lost the ability to be bored.
0:51:00.6 Jordan Syatt: Yeah.
0:51:02.1 Mike Vacanti: Any lack of stimulation and I’m just reaching. And it’s been like that since probably 2021 for me was probably the last time I had a real bout of like having more discipline over my actions and behaviors.
0:51:17.2 Jordan Syatt: You weren’t reaching for your phone before 2021 like that?
0:51:20.4 Mike Vacanti: For sure but I had a period in 2021 where I really dialed it in.
0:51:23.8 Jordan Syatt: Was that the year of the robot?
0:51:25.2 Mike Vacanti: No, the year of the robot didn’t happen. Humans aren’t robots yet, unfortunately. We might be headed that way.
0:51:35.1 Jordan Syatt: Bro, have you seen those… I forget what it’s called, like a way… Something (Waymo), it’s like an Uber, but they don’t have drivers.
0:51:42.4 Mike Vacanti: I’ve vaguely heard of this.
0:51:43.8 Jordan Syatt: They have them around Dallas. They’re literally just like streets where people are getting picked up in cars with no drivers.
0:51:52.8 Mike Vacanti: And they’re driving on the road with other…
0:51:55.4 Jordan Syatt: Yeah, highways, main roads. There are cars driving people with no drivers.
0:52:03.3 Mike Vacanti: You’re worried about this hantavirus? [laughter] What is this thing?
[overlapping conversation]
0:52:11.9 Jordan Syatt: So many points. People that are listening, they’re gonna be like, did they jump cut? Like no jump cuts. Just like that was straight from the cars to the hantavirus. I don’t know anything about it. Here’s my thing is, I’m almost like jaded from Covid based on how much like, they were like, this thing is gonna kill everybody, and da, da, da, da. And like, now I’m like, all right, really, though? Like, you know what I mean? I’ve seen some stuff where people were like, where they were talking about it, and I saw one epidemiologist be like, hey, just so you know, this is not very serious. And it’s very easy to…
0:52:56.0 Mike Vacanti: Not very serious because more difficult transmission. Covid had low mortality rate, high transmission.
0:53:02.7 Jordan Syatt: From what this one epidemiologist said, and I don’t know if it’s accurate, they said it had nothing about transmission. It was about, like, if you get it, it’s still pretty easily treatable with antibiotics.
0:53:11.1 Mike Vacanti: I saw 35% mortality, like one in three.
0:53:13.6 Jordan Syatt: Really?
0:53:14.1 Mike Vacanti: Yeah.
0:53:14.9 Jordan Syatt: Oh, shit. Yeah. Now I’m worried about it.
0:53:18.0 Mike Vacanti: But the fact that it wasn’t even on your radar until now makes me feel better.
0:53:22.1 Jordan Syatt: I mean, it’s all over my feed. I just don’t pay attention to it.
0:53:24.6 Mike Vacanti: Oh, good for you.
0:53:26.2 Jordan Syatt: I didn’t realize… Wow. I hadn’t heard that. Fuck that epidemiologist if that’s true. Because they’re like, yeah, it’s… The one epidemiologist I saw was like, yes, really very easily treatable. Not a big deal.
0:53:36.8 Mike Vacanti: Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what I had heard.
0:53:39.3 Jordan Syatt: I have no clue. I’m… That was the issue with how they handled Covid is now there could be a real fucking problem. And there’s a huge lack of trust that was created.
0:53:53.0 Mike Vacanti: Yeah. All right. Thank you for listening to this week’s episode of How To Become A Personal Trainer, we’ll be back next week. Anything else, Jordan?
0:54:08.9 Jordan Syatt: Thank you for listening. Please leave a five star review, iTunes, Spotify, written reviews, thumbs up on YouTube. Thank you so much, have a wonderful week. Talk to you soon.
0:54:18.0 Mike Vacanti: See ya.
